Scripture Alone

As a business, Foreknown Birth Services affirms the Nicene and Apostles Creeds as well as the Westminster Shorter Catechism. All doulas (primary or back-ups) hold to these foundational truths of the Christian faith for church and all of life.

In addition to these general confessions, all those serving Foreknown Birth hold the following views as they pertain to family life, motherhood, and birth (read below).

Above all, Foreknown Birth Services holds to the timeless and inspired truths of Scripture and all we do here is informed by it.

Regarding Life

Every human being was made in the image of God. Every human being was made on purpose, with unique attributes, and an intentional story by God's will. These amazing scientific realities about God's hand in creation are undeniable. As a result of this truth, every human life has value in the eyes of God and should also hold value in the eyes of others regardless of sex, race, nationality, socioeconomic background, medical or mental diagnosis, life experience, or sin committed.

Abortion in any circumstance and at any stage of pregnancy is the intentional taking (murder) of another human life. The taking of any human life is sinful and in opposition to God's Word, character, and way of life for His people*. It is up to Christians to speak up regarding the value of any human life at any stage especially when murder is being committed.

*With that being said, God sent His Son Jesus Christ to die upon the cross to atone for our sins and transgressions (John 3:16). Anyone who has committed murder or any sin (including those who have experienced abortion) can confess to God and be forgiven; Their slates being "wiped clean" and welcomed into loving arms by God (1 John 1:5-10). All who come to Him will be saved (John 6:36-38)!

Regarding Gender

It's clearly stated during the Bible's account of the creation of humanity that every human being was made either male or female. Additionally, because we know each human being was created with intention by God's hand (and God is perfect), we can confidently know that no person is truly "in the wrong body" or created by mistake; Despite what conditions (such as gender dysphoria) may lead individuals to feel.

Regarding Marriage

Following in step with the creation order, all of history and Scripture tells us that natural God-ordained marriage is between one man and one woman. Marriage is meant to be a living symbol for Christ and The Church. Marriage is not the most important thing God has called us to accomplish (and He does not call everyone to it), but it is a blessing to us as His people and a sacred covenant that must be honored.

Regarding Children

Children in any situation, in any context, anywhere, at any time are always an intentional blessing from God whether this is recognized by surrounding people or not (See the section above titled "Regarding Life"). Children are a heritage from God. Children are to be unhindered and allowed to exist in the world in order to glorify God's Kingdom.

Regarding Childbirth

Childbirth was a natural process created by God. After The Fall childbirth became painful and (like everything else) tainted by sinfulness and imperfections. Although a woman's body has been created to give birth to her children, we live in a fallen world, and the possibility of health complications for mother or baby will always be there.

It's important to note that painful childbirth is not a result of God cursing women. During The Fall God directly curses the serpent and there are multiple other accounts throughout the Bible where God curses people directly. However, Eve (and all women after her) were not cursed directly as a result of the woman's actions. Painful childbirth is a consequence of The Fall but it is not a curse.

Regarding "Supernatural Childbirth" or "Pain-Free Birth by Faith"

Childbirth is a special and transformative event. Pain free childbirth is possible for many women, however, claims that childbirth can be pain free or easier simply by praying harder, tithing more money, or having more faith are a result of a false gospel or false belief about God. Believing that anything will happen or be given to oneself as a result of performance is unbiblical, contrary to the Gospel, and falls in line with the heretical teaching known as the "prosperity gospel".

With that being said, God is a good and gracious God. He hears our prayers and does things for us that we could never imagine. He is faithful to His people and works all things out for our good and His glory. Yet, there is nothing we could do to save ourselves or to move God's will to fit our ideal outcomes. It is up to us to surrender control to Christ and trust that His will is the best thing for us (even when we couldn't possibly make sense of the results); Even in Gethsemane Jesus Christ submits to the Father's will. It is only by Christ that we have been saved and it is only by God's will and grace (not our own doing) that we can experience pain free childbirth. Most importantly, it is not a result of faithlessness that one has a painful birth or negative birth outcome.

Regarding Doula Work

Although the phrase "doula" is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, birth companions are seen once. In 1 Samuel 4:19-20, a birth takes place and a woman is there alongside the mother, described only as "the woman attending her". We know that this attendant was different from a midwife as the Hebrew phrase for midwife used earlier in Scripture is different in this passage.

Furthermore, the word "Doula" means "a woman who serves" in Greek. Servanthood is certainly a key component of the Christian life. Doula work, when rooted in faith in Christ, can surely be kingdom work that brings glory to God.
